'Worrying milestone' in measles cases

Tuesday, 30 April, 2013

Commenting on another increase in the number of measles cases – which have now topped 1,000 – Shadow Minister for Health, Darren Millar AM, said:

“This is an extremely worrying milestone in an on-going outbreak which continues to grow and remains of great concern.

“When the epidemic has subsided, it is crucial that an independent public inquiry is set up by the Welsh Government so that lessons can be learned for the future.

“Increasing costs continue to be piled upon health boards, who are already struggling to make ends meet, and I urge the Minister to confirm his willingness to underwrite the costs associated with the outbreak as a matter of urgency.

“Worries about money are the last thing that NHS bosses need when they are fire-fighting a potentially deadly disease.”

Assembly Member for South Wales West, Suzy Davies AM, said:

“This epidemic remains of great concern to families in and around Swansea – but also right across Wales. Refusal by the Labour Health Minister to commit to financial support to the Health Board is also worrying.

“It’s vitally important that the Welsh Labour Government does all it can to assist NHS staff in their determined efforts to control the outbreak.”

South Wales West Assembly Member, Byron Davies AM, said:

“Further transparency is required from the Minister – both in details of his conversations with the health board and in the government’s long-term plans.

“An independent public inquiry into the outbreak is absolutely crucial if we are to learn lessons and properly prepare for the future.”
